    help with pilots badge please

    here we have a well worn assman pilots badge that i am looking to buy can i get your opinions please as to it being genuine ,as you can see the eagle has been soldered to the wreath,but also i am not sure about the hinge and clasp,

        thanks for your input ,if you look very hard at the back of the eagle it seems to have the A mark on it for assmann i think

          I know, i was looking at the other thread and posting in yours...my bad......Anyway, setup on this badge don't look like known Assmann's to me.

            It is the correct setup for a later war Assman ZINC pilot's badge. However, the eagle was originally rivetted on, so this badge is damaged (catch) and heavily repaired (solder reinforced rivets). At least one rivet seems to be replaced and comes through on the obverse wing. I would not buy that one although it is original. Too much damage for my taste.

              Great info Frank. So this late war zinc setup was different from the Aluminum examples as well?

                  Here is what it once looked like (collection prorege1). The rivets on those are not hammered flat, they actually are flat and thus differ from the typical Assmann cup-rivets found on Tombak badges. The setup can be found on all zinc Assmann Luftwaffe badges:

                    Wow, thanks for posting this picture Frank. From the hardware based point it looks like totally different badge...it is kind of interesting because wreath was offering enough flat surface for secure soldering of the old type catch without the plate and of course hinge is different as well...it makes me wonder what forced Assmann to do these drastic changes…

                        Actually, whoever made the repair on the badge in question, did a pretty nice job of 'flowing' the solder. A nice smooth, and I bet secure, repair.

                          i can live with the repairs so i have put in an offer for the badge as a gap filler until something else comes along.i know its an old cleche but it could be period repair who knows
