I'm more intrigued by the ribbon with the star on it. What's that? A foreign award?

Very interesting ribbon bar. Usually you see the valore militare in wear like this, (italian ribbon with hand embroidered star) and not included in the usual german ribbon bar with a metallic star.

Thanks for the help in turning the pictures to the correct position!

For me it looks like the pendant is made out of some sheet metal, which made me think it was a handmade one-of-a-kind piece. Seems likely that it originated in the units work shop. As suggested I also think there must have been an emotional connection between the flyer and the "schwarze männer" that made him keep on wearing this version.

I had actually missed the foreign award on the ribbon bar, thanks for pointing that out!
