    Luftwaffe tank badge grouping

Here is a group that I recently saw on emedals. I thought it would be interesting to discuss because of the rarity. Here is part of the description from medals website pertaining to the badge:
The Tank Badge of the Luftwaffe “Panzerkampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe” is a known field-made example, consisting of a late war manufacture Luftwaffe Ground Assault Badge “Erdkampfabzeichen”, with the cloud and lightning bolt removed, and substituted with the tank of a late war manufacture Wehrmacht Tank Badge “Panzerkampfabzeichen. It is constructed of cast zink, and consists of an oval oak wreath with a ribbon at the bottom and a traditional Luftwaffe eagle at the top, with a Panzerkampfwagen IV superimposed in the centre on grassy ground, with its left tank track extending over the edge of the badge; the reverse is plain, with the cracks that would have been made during modification filled in. It has an integrated hinge, and was made with an integrated catch, which has been broken off. It measures 43.54 mm (w) x 56.72 mm (h) and weighs 40.2 grams. It is accompanied by an official award certificate to Non-Commisioned Officer (Unteroffizier) Peter Wöcker of the Fallschirm-Panzergrenadier Division 2 “Hermann Göring”. It is signed by Generalmajor and Divisionsführer Hans-Horst Necker at his headquarters on February 2nd, 1945, and bears the official seal of the Divison Hermann Göring in the bottom left corner. It measures 148 mm (w) x 209 mm (h).

I have a very hard time believing this physical award.

I can believe the document would exist, but no opinion on this one.

For whatever it's worth the physical award in Kleitmann's book is very different.

And again, what it's worth, Littlejohn and Dodkins show a very different physical badge more consistent with Kleitmann.

I met with two HG vets when I lived in Germany and they never saw the Luftwaffe tank award or Luftwaffe close combat clasp. They were awarded the Heer versions of these badges.

eMedals is a guy who is an expert in nothing but will sell anything if there's a buck in it. That's OK... He's had some good stuff there but buyer has to have a clue.

If you look closely its an original AWS erd with an adddition of a tank. No expert if its an original cutoff tank from a panzer badge. The reverse you see the discolorations and signs of soldering as well on the front. This is complete garbage. I dont beleive in these either. I would say document is a forgery as well. A dealer expert or not would see this immediately, its amazing to sell this crap called a known field made example as original war time!!!

The description says it is a field made badge. I have not seen anything like it so I thought a discussion would be interesting. As far as the tank doc, I would have expected just a simple typed piece without the fancy tank pre printed. Anyway, I can't say for certain it is bad but I had some reservations. Supposedly straight form the family. It would be interesting to hear some more details of the provenance.

Look at the back of the badge, you can see the attempt to cover up where the tank badge was added in.

PAB experts should have a good chance of being able to type the tank to either a genuine or fake badge. If it's from a know post WW2 fake, then that tells you a lot about the authenticity of the "field" conversion.

Heinz, give me your Erdkampf, so I can ruin Karl's Panzer badge and glue it on for you.., Karl will get a new Panzer as soon as we're back home..

The autograph on the panzer doc is not from the same hand IMO.

Time for the numbered balloon badges now.. field made, bitte ..

So this is a Luftwaffe Ground assault badge that's had the tank from a Heer Silver Panzer Assault Badge soldered over the top but no one has any idea when they were put together. Probably last week.

I would imagine in February 1945 the Luftwaffe would have better things to do than making these things, although who ever made the badge did a really good job
