I don't think late war. My feeling is that they were one of the last 1st E type produced. After the 2nd type was available there would have been no need to produce the obsolete type with new dies and tooling. There would have been no customer demand. ~ED

One thing that it does have going for it ... if it was a reproduction, they would have made sure it was painted up all nice ....

The flat base zinc with little gilding left is one check mark for authenticity in my book You dont see these zincers around much for the 1st Pattern.

First off, the 1st Pattern are more rare than the second pattern, thus they are typically more expensive. That being said, the versions made by Schwerin that are made of Tombak and maker marked are more desirable of this type.

                          E-boat Badge

                          Hello Bill,
That 1st pattern E-boat badge is good. I owned several over the years and one came from a vet back in 1975 or so, I paid around $8 for it. Sadly, I own none of them now for I sold them once I obtained an example by Schwerin Berlin. All of these E-boats with the "O" mark look the same, although the finish varies on them.

As a matter of fact, if you have the first edition of John Angolia's book "For Fuehrer and Fatherland" and not the reprint (the orignial 1976 edition), the author shows that exact style of badge when the 1st pattern E-boat is discussed. I am in the middle of a move and my copy is packed up, so I can't scan it.
                          Regards,
                          Jody
