    Adolf Scholze S-boat – UNMARKED!

    Hi all,

I would like to show you my friends badge. He allowed me to document it and I would like to share it with you. For me this piece is very interesting! It was found in Gablonz long time ago, unfortunately with no connection to any factory or manufacturer etc.

What I see is a flatback variant from A.Scholze, but it is not maker marked! It is clearly not finished piece, it never received the surface finish. The crimped in hardware was violently removed, but we can still see the traces of steel ball hinge.

What do you think about this piece?

Does the front match to a die that we know? Or only the reverse is different? You can clearly see that the AS in triangle logo was never presented on the reverse. Is it an end war piece from a new die that never reached serial production?

Did anybody ever saw finished A.Scholze S-boat without maker mark?

    All opinions welcome.

    Best regards
    Pavel

    Hi Pavel,
I lean to think that this is rather standard AS in triangle piece rejected at some point of production process due to quality problems and hence unfinished. The AS maker's mark could have been grouded off for some reason. Or a one-off trial piece by AS?
This is an AS design but i can see serious quality issues on the obverse. The catch crimp is also positioned much higher than on standard AS s-boots.
    Cheers,
    Hubert

I agree, some sort of factory test strike and/or reject. When compared to standard examples, the crimps are located differently and the crimps for the top hook and catch are larger than standard.

Thanks for details Norm and Bubba,

it is clear that for the presented badge AS used different reverse die. The die had different position of the crimping points and did not contain the AS in triangle logo.

We can only speculate why. I never saw unmarked example before.

        Best regards
        Pavel

I remember AS in triangle minesweepers. Some of them are marked some of them not. It seems that Scholze had not strict rules for this and was changing the dies quite offten.....

And it’s not known if “AS in triangle” was just one maker or a consortium including Adolf Scholze as a member, just like we don’t know whether “R.K.” was actually a consortium. For both “R.K.” and “AS in triangle” minesweepers there are more variants than we commonly see for a single maker. Your previous find linking Scholze to the “AS in triangle” badges (and the W&L wound badges and Schwerin 2nd pattern U-Boat clasps) still leaves open the possibility of a consortium.

But for the S-Boat there are only two known variants in the finished product, so that unmarked planchet with the oversized crimps is a one-off at this time.

            Best regards,
            —-Norm
