    U Boat Badge by FO

I would be grateful if folks might give their views on this U Boat Clasp.
    ? Friedrich Orth 3rd variation ?

These are the only photos I have . (Sorry for the lack of detail ).
? position of pin, material pin made from , details on eagle , ? too well defined ?

Again I am no expert but best to be sure and ask.
    Thank you in advance,
    JS

      Hello,

Sorry, but I do not like the look of this one. IMO it is a fake.

      Best regards,

I am not 100% into Ubot badge but this one looks ok but I can be wrong.
        Ok all finish is gone.

Is there any chance to get some more pictures of the catch?

I will ask Andy , the badge was offered to a friend of mine , I myself am by no means expressing any expertise on this badge or the award series as a whole - I would by nature be cautious and this has been amplified by recent experience of a dud blockade runner badge.
Looking at Weber and Skora'a guide (Vol 1) it does not really make me comfortable with it but would defer to more learned and experienced individuals here.

I am home from work now and took a check in the book.
Take a look on page 108 and 109

Well as said I am not a expert on those but it looks very close.
We have to wait for more inputs

I am looking at the same badge. No further pics available from seller online.
                  No go Andy?

                    HI guys,
I'm the seller of this badge in another venue.
It has been vetted here a while ago if memory serves me well. There were no issues then other than a post war box which is not part of the sale.
It compares favorably to the f.o. 's shown in the Weber/Skora reference books. I don't have them in front of me at the moment and don't remember exactly which variation it was.
Anyway, that's where it stands now.
                    Thanks for your comments.
                    Tony

                      Hi Guys,

I don't recall this one being discussed before, but I can see why Tom and JS have some reservations. It's UC# 5.6.2 in the classification system but the maker mark is unusually low down and there's been excessive trimming around the eagle head, wing tops and the u-boat's suprastructure.

I wonder if it might have been a mis-strike that was salvaged by the Orth factory in hopes no one would look too closely (until 75 years later)?

Tony always posts the most interesting discussion items!

                      Best regards,
                      ---Norm

Tony, could you please post dimensions and weights and show closeups of the hinge and catch? Here's an old thread where Tom posted his Orth U-Boat badges with dimensions and weights for comparison:

Hm, on closer look, there is a problem when you enlarge and brighten this view.

The bend of the main pin around the hinge and the tooling marks are not correct and the corner of the oval hinge flange is cut off. These are usually quite consistent and the hinge should be set within an oval depression in the reverse on this variant.

                          Best regards,
                          ---Norm

No problem as this badge is no longer for sale.
                              All the best.
