But the fecit usually refers to the one who designed it, not the maker?

Sure, but as with Bock being mentioned on Schwerin badges, Wilhelm COULD be the designer. But I could also see how somebody would use AUSGEF. for the maker. Not that far fetched.
But what disturbs me most is that we have never seen these and now, 4 seems to have popped up during recent months. A little worrying, canĀ“t wait to handle one of those.Cheers, Frank

Hi,
This is not a new type of badge. I inspected a couple a local dealer had 4 or 5 years ago. They both apparently came from different sources at different times - finish/condition on both badges was also different from memory but I don't recall hinge/pin/catch details. The local dealer I think indicated he'd had one for a while, maybe as far back as early 90s or late 80s. I've seen one or two from other sources, at least one on eBay and definitely one on file from Manions in (June 2001) - maybe 1/2 dozen all up including the one in this thread. I know they've been at least mentioned here in the past, possibly even imaged as well, so I'm surprised to hear some of the "first time I've seen them" comments.
From memory, they are one piece and the obverse detail is good but I personally don't trust them. They seemed "wierd" and not quite right - way too unknown for me to spend serious money on. The semi-hollow construction is very unusual, as is the maker. Unusual base-metal from what I recall as well - I didn't get the impression they were zinc. I personally require some solid German KM veteran provenance before I'd consider them anything other than "suspect".

The hinge surely appears to be a period style hinge as well as the pin...the catch however is unusual in that if the first badge is zinc then it is interesting how the catch is soldered directly onto the back of the badge and not onto a backing plate. Otherwise the badge does have a good look but I am on the fence.

I think it is mighty strange! In 60 years no one has seen one and now a bunch turn up. These badges would be immediately dismissed as fakes if they came from the usual fake merchants like Pieces of History and the like. I don't like the strange metal, and believe they are fakes.

I am also not crazy about it. Interesting to note that the badge currently offered by Carsten is the SAME (as in "one and the same") badge that was listed by Kai.Visit my Badge Collection: http://lbmilitaria.homestead.com/home.html

Hmmmmm.....the plot thickens.
Three weeks ago, a "little hand" got the badge for 950 Euros off Kai's site.
Now...Carsten offers the same badge for 495 Euro.
