Incidentally, I noticed that the beak of the eagle was poorly formed. Is this one of the main give aways of this fake?

Not really, this is one of the best known and documented u-boat fakes, F&R never made any KM awards. It has very distinct design and sometimes comes with Schwerin mm as well as unmarked.
