    Hi Alex,
I had very similiar dilemmas about my badge posted here:
    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...16&postcount=2
The gilt on the wreath was even harder to condemn on it since the silvering on the boat was also in very good shape. But after checking and comparing tens of other Schwerin s-boots I had to admit that it's no way that the gilt on my badge was factory made. It could be refinished wartime but it was not Schwerin-made gilt IMO.
    Cheers,
    Hubert

      Hi Hubert,

The idea of wartime refinishing seems very unbelievable to me. Imo for the recipient it was much easier and cheaper to buy a new badge. Also I can't understand the reason for refinishing during the war the wreath of the mint badge - at least the reverse is almost mint even today. And doing it later - too jewelry work for a common and cheap badge.

But by that point it wasn't just a cheap badge; it was a tangible symbol of their service, camaraderie and lost past. (Again, just speculation on both sides.)

        Best regards,
