managed to find this great badge.
It's hard to capture the beauty of the finish but it's almost 100% preserved.

The way I like them!
The Kriegsmarine was pure bling bling, with rich golden colours. This is exactly how these things looked like back in those glories days.
The many dull grey zinc awards with evaporated finish, the worn off to the reddish brown base metal dagger fittings and buckles etc... I don't like them. They are only an ugly faded ghost of the past. I still can't understand what is beautiful about them.

Well Wim,you first have to understand the history behind an individual badge.

I would would take a worn or de-Nazified award,zinc or tombak that was named or came with provenance from a known crewman than a "minty" unissued boxed emample anyday.

Just because it is zinc,tombak,worn and faded,to certain collectors it is a thing of beauty.

To each his own I guess.

I always love the quality of the early Tombak awards. Always nice seeing a bit of copper peeking through on a Narvik Shield.

Yes, I partly understand. If you know the recipient it's a different story. It gives more value to a well worn award.

On the other hands I admit I'm an extremely purist; de-Nazified badges gives me even more the creeps than a well worn piece. The recipient no longer stands behind the ideals he once fought for.

Yes, exactly. It is not always old stock but in many cases posthumously awarded. I had such a stone mint, awarded HSF in my hands recently.

That is because if he remained in the service postwar and wanted to proudly wear his awards on his uniform,then this is what the law dictated.

The same applies if he wanted to wear his awards at a postwar reunion,pre 1957.

I do believe that the majority of de-Nazified awards that are out there were done by the recipients.
