    U-boat badge

Picked this up at the SOS.

Before I return it to the seller, I wanted to let you guys reaffirm my thoughts on this badge.

I'm of the opinion that the badge is an elaborate reproduction.

The pin an catch are war time, but from a different maker.

The eagles head and other features just don't match for me.

Anyone else see this on U-boat badges.

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Cheers,
    Howard

          Hi Howard,
It's always difficult to evaluate badges in such condition but I lean to think that this is extremely worn original tombak Schwerin with replaced complete hardware and damaged eagles beak which could happened when soldering replacement hinge?
          Cheers,
          Hubert

I had it in hand at the SOS and thought the obverse looked incredibly good and I thought it was a worn original as well. Obviously the badge is tombak and has a repaired catch with what appears to be wartime hardware from a zinc donor badge with catch plate.

Thank you Hubert an Norm for sharing your knowledge.

I collected/sold badges many years ago but never felt very comfortable, I'm a cloth guy.

Thanks so much for the help.

                Cheers,
                Howard
