I agree, an original badge, but I still have doubts about the obverse finish. Admittedly it's often a challenge to assess the finish on zinc badges, but in this comparison clearly the finish on the boat is heavily worn, out of proportion to the well-retained gilding on the wreath which doesn't match the splashover on the edges of the reverse.

        Best regards,
        ---Norm

Well, we see this all the time with second pattern SB S-boats of course. I personally only like the ones like the example posted above by Norm or like this one.

The rest, with a few exceptions, have probably been repainted/finished.

              Hello,

I do not want to misuse this thread...but why E-Boat badges from AS are holding so much better the finish than other zinc E-Boats lie this ones from Schwerin ? Is it the base metal or the type of finish they had used ?
Most of the time badges with a lot of finish remaining are AS ones...

              Thanks
              Christian

                Hi Christian,

Each maker had their own characteristic finishing techniques on their zincers (and some, like Schwerin, Deumer and F&B, produced two different finish variants -- a more basic paint-like finish and a more metallic better-lasting finish).

But also, some makers applied a coppery flash-undercoating (as was recommended in the trade journals of the day) which resulted in better preservation of the gilding. "AS in triangle" used this technique whereas Schwerin did not, which is another reason for the difference in appearance today.

                Best regards,
                ---Norm

Also S&L used this technique of a copper undercoating. Here are my two crimped zinc S&L CABs. Top one is copper coated.
                  Cheers,

Here's an example of an "AS in triangle" S-Boat that shows the copper coating. This coating was often extremely thin and not easy to see. But I don't doubt that also the gilding paint used by AS in Gablonz was a slightly different recipe from Schwerin's.

                    Best regards,
                    ---Norm
