    U-Boat Bullion Badge

    Good Evening,

I am asking the knowledgeable folks on this forum if they can tell me if this is a legitimate item or a reproduction.

I recently obtained a U-Boat cloth bullion qualification badge. It was made on very dark blue or black wool, has 'white' water embroidered under the U-Boat itself and came with a couple of moth nips. The backing was once covered with some type of paper.

Any and all comments would be appreciated and I look forward to your replies.

    Thank you for your time.

    Bill,

There is no photographic evidence of a bullion U-boat badge in wear and no bullion example has been totally accepted by the collector community as period to the TR era.

We do have evidence of the machine embroidered U-Boat badge and that has been posted on the forum previously.

Thank you for your reply John.

I did read a ton of threads mentioning the embroidered badges but I had not run across the type I have.

I appreciate you taking the time to set me straight.

        Bill,

Type in the search box above (just for this forum) the word bullion.

You will see a lot of threads about them, like this one:

Then there is this one posted by the dealer münster on this forum where he says a bullion example came in a grouping.

So maybe the one posted by him indicates such bullion examples did exist.

Yours is not like his though, but there would have been many variations if they were produced during the war:

Although it's impossible to come to a firm conclusion, these are still very interesting. As John said, those two are different from each other, but yet they certainly share some stylistic features and the backing is very similar.

There's also variability in the rare hand-made bullion Minesweepers. In both cases no photographs in wear to guide us, but for what it's worth we're told that both of these Minesweeper examples came from estates of German navy officers. (Previous thread here.) Again there is a similarity in style to that U-Boat patch.

This area is still very much in the "data collection" phase.

            Best regards,
            ---Norm
