Uboat badge on e-stand

I am putting this unmarked uboat badge with nice finish up on the e-stand, but I would just like to confirm that everything is good with it. These are not my expertise. Many thanx. Jacques

Hi Jacques,

This design and style of badge has two possible makers -- the so-called "flatback" maker attributed these days to Rettenmaier, and the post-war unmarked Souval U-Boat.

The hinge and the finish on your badge looks "wartime compatible" but the finish seems to continue on to the inside of that very atypical catch. Could be an atypical Rettenmaier-attributed badge but it's impossible to rule out post-war construction.

Just to be clear I'm NOT saying it has to be a post-war badge. I don't think we can be more definitive without seeing other examples of awards with that unusual catch.

I only just noticed that the flanges of the hinge have sharp corners so in that case I agree 100% with Daniel -- a post-war Souval setup.

Well for me it was a "two look" post-war badge.

If the hinge flanges had round corners, the only anomaly would be the bizarre catch, and the problem is that the flatback zinc U-boats (which have an obverse identical to the post-war Souval) all look crappy anyway. There's no reason that Rettenmaier (who continued in business after the war just like Souval and S&L) couldn't also have continued on merrily producing these stinkers for decades, just like Souval. We just don't know.

I was just giving it the benefit of the doubt (like Daniel usually does) - until I noticed the sharp corners on the hinge flanges, that is.

I also agree here - this is a Souval postwar production. This type of catch they also used instead of the typical "Souval claw" we all know.
