Assman never made a U-boat war badge. Other war badges, yes, but not this one.

Would like to see a better shot of the neck. I can't tell if it's a decent casting (look at the poor detail of the inner feathering) of a Schwerin or one of the Cyclops/feathered neck fakes with a bad marking. In any case, the basemetal and uneven finishing around the conning tower and deck ring lots of alarm bells for me.

I would agree with the above comments.

A very good reproduction based on the Schwerin design with a spurrious Assmann MM.

                Regards,Martin.

I agree too. In fact it's a slight variation on this "Schwerin"-marked example posted by John in the Fakes Gallery:

Apparently part of an old series of fakes from the same source.

                  Best regards,

                    In Zinc

I saw one a few years ago at the max marked with the Assmann A that was made out of a zinc or lead based material. It was aged shockingly good but the inside of the wreath was as jagged as a saw blade. I should have took a picture.

I have to admit, it does not look that bad to me. The texture of the material looks quite right, I doubt that this is a casting with some sort of low quality alloy, like we use to see on the Dortmund fakes. The hardware also looks quite good. DonĀ“t get me wrong, I am not saying the piece is original, but it would be interesting to examine this piece in hand. I have never seen anything like this before.

                      Regards,

                      Daniel

Here's a fake Minesweeper that is probably by the same "maker". It's based on the RK design but has a pin system similar to the fake U-Boat and the same "A" stamp.

                        Best regards,

                          Hello Norn,

is this really the same "A" strike?

                          Regards,

                          Daniel

Yes indeed. Although the angle of the photo is a bit different and the mark is struck more deeply into the Minesweeper, you can see that they have the same features. Also, both have a similar soft-featured block hinge.

There's another line of fake Minesweepers likewise based on the RK but with a Deumer-like horizontally oriented setup and a fake "4" mark for S&L added for good measure. These also use the soft-featured block hinge. I'm not sure if these are from the same workshop but they certainly could be; the modus operandi was to copy one style of badge but add a different maker's mark.

                              Best regards,
