            Destroyer

            Hello,
It also looks good to me. I agree it is washed and not fire gilt.

I agree...this looks like an original zincer to me and hence the wash as opposed to fire gilding.

I have ran into this badge time to time. What is the pin on the back of the eagle?

The top hook is there to fit into a loop on the uniform. This keeps the badge flush with the jacket and is supposed to prevent it snagging on protruding objects. Very important on a small ship I would imagine.

...It is also seen on minesweeper badges, first pattern and second pattern e-boat badges too, French coastal artillery badges and maybe some others I have not thought of...because these badges have the horizontal pins and if it did not have this hook the badge would flop down as Skip said.

..and the reason these badges have horizontal pins...in my theory...is because if they had vertical pins you could see the pins from the front as the badges have a cut out area...so it is done for artistic convenience.

                        E Boat

Somewhere in the boxes is an Eboat, I did'nt like it but I will ask Dion to find it and scan it for opinions as he thought it was a second version whatever that is.

                        regards
