Some time ago I was studying these badges, and noticed that every maker is in fact different. Ok, no news there, but it is actually possible to ID Destroyer badges from the obverse pictures alone. I noticed that on every maker, the first wave lick was different. Of course there are other differences from badge to badge, as is always the case with different makers, but this singular difference always seems to be maker specific.

(Special thanks to Lorenzo, as I borrowed the images from his website, except for the Schwerin)

      Another Schwerin

      Gary,

Another shot for comparison. Notice the original gilding on these Schwerin pieces is very bright and quite yellow looking. Yours looks more like my Juncker badge, finish-wise, when it comes to the wreath.

I don't like the back of your badge at all and though you claim to have taken steel wool to it, it appears to me that the base metal looks different entirely.

I agree with others on the points mentioned and Mark clearly shows some interesting details to the waves, though there are more variations as well.

One item not mentioned is the hinge pin. Yours is too wide (fat) in the center when compared to originals and I have noticed that on your coastal badge as well. This seems to be a common mistake made on fakes, or at least what I have seen IMO.

          Schwerin Destroyer

          Hi Gary,

Sorry to say but in my opinion the Schwerin Destroyer you show is definately a copy sometimes called the same "cave creek" type. There are several give away's the easiest one to spot (cut away under the gun) has been previously mentioned. Detlev illustrated this as his copy of the week some time ago. The pin is also a giveaway with this line of badges being generally too fat in the middle and too thin at the ends. You will probably find it is easy to bend with finger pressure which can not be done with original pins. If you look very closely at the side of the hinge you may find that this is actually made of two pieces (thin metal wrapped around a core, difficult to explain but obvious when seen). This is also a charateristic of the Schwerin copies. If you have not seen it already would suggest you have a look at the article on Schwerin badges on the Assoc members Site.
          Regards
          Rob.

                KM Badge Article

I am looking to do a small piece on the U-boat badge but only related to Schwerin manufacture, I do not have much experience with other makes.

                Will PM you regarding this.

                Regards
                Rob.
