    Auxiliary cruiser for review

    Hi guys,

I have this badge for some time, originaly obtained from a fellow collector here. It was a fresh find, covered with bad zink pest. So I took care of it, and it looks much better. It is Funke & Brünninghaus maker, if I´m not mistaken.

    Hi Joseph,

It's a "wartime compatible" S&L, i.e. made with all wartime parts, although with S&L we never know when assembly actually occurred. Can you show a closeup of the rivet for good measure?

    Best regards,
    ---Norm

      Norm,

First of all, thanks for your feedback.

Unfortunately I can not provide rivet´s closeup before this Sunday.

This is a badge that i would consider to be of wartime production by S&L.

I would also like to see a photo of the rivet on this one when you get a chance.

        Cheers,Martin.

Agree with Norm. New pics are a great help, thank you. It has had a bit of a rough life but it is still a nice badge.

I would wonder if the pest was caused by it actually being worn on the ocean. Nice work...looks great.

Your opinion is much appreciated gents. I wish this badge saw some action on the sea. This one is definitely staying with me.

                            Hi Guys,

Not to detract from Joseph's nice wartime zincer, but do we have any evidence to date that any S&L zincer saw action, i.e. was an official KM award?

Martin W. and Joe Slavick have done the most research on this topic and could comment with more experience, but it strikes me that official award pieces or pieces found in reasonably certain crewman groupings were Juncker and Schwerin pieces, and one Tombak Meybauer from member Pitomnik's grouping. I'm wondering if these zincers were mass produced towards the end of the war as private purchase and replacement awards with many leftover in May, 1945 (as well as lots of leftover components).

I agree Joseph's wartime example has the best chance of actually having been worn at sea, but despite that romantic notion it could just as well have been poorly stored in a damp area for some time in the last 70 years.

                            Best regards,
                            ---Norm
