Here's another example of the zinc RK MS (different variant) in a carton with the same green patterned exterior but this one has staples at the corners.

Here's an R.S.S. Gablonz-made Fleet badge in a carton (no staples). Only one I've seen packaged like this but the carton is somewhat similar to that housing this R.K. IAB.

Here's a G.W.L zinc U-Boat in a hinged cardboard carton. Again the only one I've seen. I can't imagine the cloth backing is original but is the carton?

I understand F.L.L. also in LĂ¼denscheid was known to use a hinged cardboard carton so maybe (although quite different style)? Obviously we're in a grey area here.

And speaking of F.L.L, another one-off posted is this minty F.L.L. Coastal Artillery zincer in a marked carton. Again a grey area.

Although the unofficial "French-made" badges remain controversial, there's no controversy about the type of packaging they came in since we consistently see this unique patterned unstapled carton.

The PAB of Hermann Aurich, over in Dresden, was packaged in the tan cartons. Perhaps we could infer that the Aurich Coastal Artillery badge was similarly packaged (but we can't be sure).

Regardless how a badge is packaged for shipping to the KM, more likely than not it was presented loose to the sailor. Even in the photo shown earlier from January 1942, although Ulrich is holding the cartons, in his left hand you see what appears to be a loose badge removed from the packaging for presentation.

Perhaps Martin W. or Joe S. can clarify for us from their studies if any of the veteran's groupings included the original carton?

This photo is described as an S-Boat badge presentation from the 1.SFltl base in Crimea. In the closeup, I can't really make out what the officer standing behind is doing but it looks like the assisting officer in front there has a cardboard tray of badges in his left hand and is handing them loose with his right hand to the officer who's presenting.

So that's a start to the carton thread. Please feel free to post any examples for discussion or insights in this topic.

                          Best regards,

Yes René, it's thanks to the past postings and expertise of collectors like you that we can make this thread.

Could you perhaps comment on the paper hinged G.W.L. U-Boat carton and the F.L.L. Marine Artillery carton? Since they're each one-offs, I can't tell if they're legit or not.

                              Best regards,

The FLL Marine Art. carton is a real gem. Tried to obtain it several times without any luck. The style is the same as FLL pilots, AG and ROAG Cartons.
The U boat I would like to see better pictures but looks like the same style as for the IAB and those are legit.
