    1st pattern S-boat variant?

    Guys

I spotted this badge on the E-Militaria site and am scratching my head. It appears to be an original earlier version of the 1st pattern with the coloured bow splash. Check out the maker mark! Anyone seen that before??

    Best

    Patrick

Frightening. I wish we had better photos and closeups to draw some conclusions about the production details. Oh well, the Schwerin S-Boat will always be the target of high-end fakers due to its popularity with collectors driving up prices.

          Best regards,
          ---Norm

I'm not sure the badge is fake- the finish looks spot on to me, polished swaz, all the bells and whistles. Why would someone make such a perfect copy and then add a totally different maker mark as seen on the 2nd pattern badges?

Unless it's a work in process and this is a trial run while honing their skills? The mark isn't like the 2nd pattern badges either. But really, we can't know for sure whether it's a fake or meets the grade in the details without better photos; the photos are inadequate so we're stuck there. For now, I think it has to be considered guilty until proven innocent by detailed images.

              Best regards,
              ---Norm

It has different outlines (both external and internal) and didn't use the usual Schwerin trimming tools.

Of course different from the old "Cave Creek Specials" but a lot of similarity in the shaping around the eagle's head which is different from known originals.

Yes, that would be a very good fake if it is indeed what it is.

Its interesting to think why....or how someone would go through the trouble of trying to make an EXACT copy or casting of an original....but then not be able to pick up the maker mark correctly. That seems to defy logic that the casting was so perfect that it picks up the most minor details on the obverse, but then cannot correctly cast the maker mark....arguably the most important part of a badge to get right IMO. That makes me think we aren't looking at a fake....but certainly a questionable badge for sure.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

A couple of obverse comparisons to originals. Comparison is limited by the poor quality of the image. Unusual for the wave on the ship's hull to be darkened.

Strange too about the "focal aging" in the lower left corner of the wreath.

So without further photos to clear things up, I guess we're left with two possibilities:

                            1) a rare prototype "sample" with a reverse die that never went into mass production or
                            2) another high end fake

                            Best regards,

I vote for 2) unless I see better images.
Sometimes fakers produce 'different variant' of known badge in order to excuse some other minor discrepancies to known original variants. I remember the 'feathered eagle' Minesweeper fake of completely individual design
but made so well that many got burnt on it including me...
                              Cheers,
                              Hubert
