Thanks for posting, Alex. What's the base metal for the Assmann?

    Best regards,

Wow, excellent information Alex! Thank you very much for taking the time to post these.

Thanks also to Brian for the great information on his grouping and posting the document along with the badge.

        Thanks guys.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

          Hi Guys

Back in 2008 I got this IAB with the attached Doc. Notice the Doc is dated Feb. 1942.

Does this (considered) early Tombak IAB belong together with an award Doc dated Feb. 1942 or is it a married set? I will never know for certain.

I think the same holds true about Alex's very nice award Docs and Badges; they could be original sets presented in Jan. 1942 or conjoined at a later date.

              Hi Don,

Yes, that point has already been made several times. So the more groupings that are shown and the more detail about about their origins (German vet vs. dealer) the better. That's all we can do for now.

And of course, Alex's S.H.u.Co. 41 badge in post #34 actually had the owner's initials and the date "30.1.42" scratched into the reverse somewhat convincingly, although one could argue with that too.

For the Kriegsmarine, it's apparent that Tombak awards continued to be awarded long after the transition to zinc, since we know there was a considerable stock of Tombak Schwerin Fleet badges in the Tirpitz when it was sunk. Might be different for the IAB though, I don't know. And it might vary from location to location depending on the rate at which they were awarded in that locale?

              Best regards,
              ---Norm

                Hi Don,

Very nice set, and really lovely IAB. I can believe in your set because there must have been a transition time tombak to hollow zinc to solid zinc production and it seems to have varied between makers as to when tombak stopped and zinc began. Even if every maker stopped tombak and started zinc at exactly the same time, there was still be differences in the types of badges awarded depending on where the units were at the time and the different supply situations.

Given the above, I wouldn't be surprised to find tombak IABs still being awarded as late as December 1942. And conversely, I would not be surprised to find zinc being awarded at early as January 1941, in my opinion.

                Tom

It can be put togehther later, OR it was always together

some time ago over the years I know 2 or 3 quite safe cases in which I found early tombak IABs but quite sure awarded in field end of 1942/ beginning for 1943

This just shows it was a logistic thing. It difficult to name a year of a badge just with the time of a dokucment. Maybe this is different in some other fields like KC or german cross then for mass production badges like IAB
