    Badges on Kai's update

Just looked at the update from Kai Winkler's site. He has two R.S. badges with pristine finishes (HSF and CAB). To me they look newly refinished/repainted. So new in fact that whoever did it failed to clean the excess paint out of the opening between the wreath and seconary armament on the HSF. Any other opinions on these? They also seem to be priced very reasonably for such mint badges - how unlike a dealer. Too bad these are not high enough ticket items to do paint analysis like they did for RK's to see if this is post war material.

Anyway, it's Friday afternoon and I am waiting to go to happy hour so I decided I would stir up some controversy while i wait.

He certainly does like a fake item on his site so I'm not surprised!!

I find these pieces highly controversial and would advise not to buy them.

        Jay,

Great pic of your son with the Tiger. Wish they had toys like that when I was little. Is that Bovington?

          Hi Guys,

These badges with this finish are like the ones discussed in the previous thread on this topic:
          http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=662464

I think the consensus was they're "genuine" Souval badges from leftover wartime stock, the time of assembly unknown but finished post-war in the Souval shop - maybe 1960's?

          Best regards,
          ---Norm

            Hi JAndrew,

I assume that was sarcasm? The prices strike me as outrageously high for Souvals!

Ha Ha Ha. Yes, Norm, that was an attempt at sarcasm.

What a shame to offer these as untouched badges

But in Souval's shop I'd wager, in the 60's or 70's. Unless someone acquired literally thousands of Souval's badges and finished them all in the same way. There are just too many of these badges with the same finish, and some have come from collections more than 30 years old.

                        Best regards,
                        ---Norm

                          Hi Diego,

Yes, your Souval U-Boat (discussed in this thread http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=655623) shows the earlier "wartime compatible" finish that faded over time. Perhaps that fading is what prompted Souval/Umlauf to use that bold paint-like finish decades later to pretty them up for sale? As mentioned in the other thread, Bob Hritz who dealt with Souval back then said that Souval was selling leftover wartime pieces cheaper than his newer pieces because they weren't as pretty.

                          Best regards,
                          ---Norm

So it was done in the Souval shop around 1960? Right. I am not a talented painter, but I can for sure tell you, this can be done in any shop most likely yesterday.

                              Hi Daniel,

Well, to re-iterate the postings from the other thread, RichardT got this S-Boat over 30 years ago, and the badges Chris posted at the top of that thread were also from an old collection.

I don't know whether it makes much difference to value whether they were refinished in 1970 in Souval's firm or yesterday by someone else, but I don't don't see any point for someone now to bother trying so hard to duplicate Souval's 1970 finish, especially when it only makes it look more modern?

                              Best regards,
                              ---Norm
