Cloth U-boat and destroyer from U-534

Here's the only other U-Boat example I could find of the same type as the one with provenance, this one previously posted by the late Bill Stump with a pretty decent story:

Interestingly, the Destroyer in that thread also seems to be of the same type seen in Martin W.'s period photograph.

In this side-by-side-by-side, its clear to see that Bill Stump's old badge was a better match to the period photo than the more common one we've been discussing. From these comparisons I don't doubt that both of Bill's patches, purportedly from a U-Boat man who had served on a Destroyer, were likely originals.

I presume that these are on blue cloth and not the odd green colour I can see.

It's not green cloth, it's effect made by light distortion while taking the photo.
That's not so uncommon.
