Passing of a very dear friend...

I just received this letter from the fine folks at BlackCross Militaria, and wanted to post it here for those of you who knew Larry Birks:

"Janet,

It is with a very sad heart that I must tell you of the passing of a very good friend Larry Birks. The collection world has lost a very good man. The knowledge he possessed in the Kriegsmarine area of collecting was unsurpassed. I will always cherish his smile and humor. Larry passed away this morning with family about him. He will be deeply missed in the collecting world and by me. Larry was one of my very dearest friends. I love him like a brother and will miss his as such."

That is indeed very sad news.

I met Larry a couple of times at the local shows here in San Jose,CA.

He was kind enough to give one of his books on KM insignia,with a personal inscription.

He was great to chat with and he had some very rare and fine items in his collection,including the nicest example i have seen of the Japanese made "sterling" Hilfskreuzer award.

I would like to extend my condolences to his family.

I will miss Larry ,his smile, and that laugh of his even when he was not feeling well the twinkle in his eyes and the passion in his heart was up lifting.
