    Tombac Destroyer, unmarked

    Hello

I bought this tombac Destroyer yesterday. It's in very good condition.
Who manufactured this one, is it a Schickle or a Mayer badge?
It has two little die flaws as seen on others.

    Thanks,
    Jim

It was part of this group with some other nice items.
The Juncker Hilfskreuzer is a keeper for me for sure.

That's a very good score you corralled. Congrats on some very well preserved Medals and Awards.

                Jim,

It can be confusing since classification has evolved over the years. We now consider that Schickle produced all the U-boat and Destroyer badges in tombak with identical obverse features and that when Schickle was put out of business, their stock was acquired by Mayer and Zimmerman.

                Reverse hardware varies.

I am not talking about zinc badges, just tombak.

                  Thanks all!

And John, thank you for the answer.
It's indeed a bit confusing, because in the relative new book from Weber and Skora, this badge is called a Mayer. I will note it in my book at the badges.

Well, the research evolves as you know and that is the reason Dietrich decided to publish the booklet as indicated here:

                    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...461165&page=10

When it is made available, I would recommend that you order a copy from Dietrich--should be out by March.

Your badge in fact could have been sold by Mayer, or Zimmerman, or Schickle so I would notate your book with that observation. They all have the same obverse. It is a classification refinement in the end that hopefully will help collectors understand why these three badges would have the same obverse die but different reverse setups.

The supplement in no way replaces the book you own. It mainly adds new badges that due to page limitations in the already huge hardcover edition were left out.

                    John
