As JAndrew mentioned in his earlier reply, the cloth U-Boat badges were not awarded. The sailors were awarded a metal badge (it would have been Tombak in this case and zinc later on in the war like his U-Boat clasp). Regulations required individuals to wear their badge so a market developed for these private-purchase cloth versions which were presumably easier to wear. However this practice was forbidden after mid-1942 so theoretically you shouldn't see photographs of these in wear in the late war period, only earlier.
