    KM reference book suggestions

I'm eyeballing Kriegsmarine badges and know that there are 2 references published through Bender. I already have the German/English book from the (70's?)German author whose name I can't recall.

    thx

There are two good references that I would suggest:

Weber, S., Skora,G., "Kriegsmarine War and Qualification Badges", Vol I and II.

Williamson, G., "War Badges of the Kriegsmarine".

IMO both are well done. If you could only get one then I would go for the first one. Of course no book on the subject has all the information or is without error. As we learn more then more information comes to light and then information in books like these will be updated on subsequent editions. The English editions have information that the original texts in German did not have. Look on this site and you will already find some updated information.

This information in these books should be supplemented by the pinned threads above, especially some of the U-Boat badge threads that expand on the classification system for particular makers and the Mine Sweeper thread by Norm that is excellent. Also searches will reveal excellent photos of many variations of hardware set ups that one sees on some of these badges by the same maker.

Hope this helps and welcome to the world of KM badges.

Exactly for the above reason mentioned B&D Publishing is currently in the finishing stages of a Supplement to the above mentioned book The Kriegsmarine Awards. The supplement was put together by Norm Franke and John Robinson and covers on nearly 200 pages new variations and informations of numerous badges. The supplement also includes an errata section.

It is not possible for any serious publisher to do a complete reprint after new information came up and I hope that we have found a way to satisfy the need of the collectors to be "up-to-date" at a very reasonable price without outdating the original volumes.

The booklet will have the same format as the original volumes, but will be in "paperback". It will be available in February 2013.

The B&D book is the best on the market imo. With the supplement I would not invest in anything else.

Very nice that the cover will include a beautiful colorized version of Norm's Fathers photo. Quite special and I too, look forward to reading this.

                Dietrich,
That is really wonderful news. Thank you for sharing it with us. Put me on the list for one. Seriously, of all the research books I have the two volume set on KM badges I have enjoyed the most.
