u boat badge F.O.

I recently purchased a U boat badge marked F.O from a well respected dealer. It looks ok except that the pin is mounted
vertically instead of horizontally as shown in photos to be the
standard for this maker. Is a vertical mounted pin appropriate
for an F O badge?

Dan,

Either is fine. F.O. made them with either horizontal or vertical pins. (Always a thin needle pin, with a ? shaped retaining clip also from round wire.) On the horizontal pin versions, there is a small o mark at the base, a position indicator for the retaining clip if assembled as a vertical pin version.
