Interesting U-boat find

I also wonder if there was any tradition among U-boat crews to buy and wear (on caps?) such souvenirs from naval bases they operated from? Or it was just done by this sailor for his reasons.

I did a little internet searching and it seems that these little enamel charms have been very popular items in the past and are collected in their own right by many people. But then I guess there is a collector for about anything. I wonder if they are still made?
