Auxillary fleet badges, im new to this and need some help

hello all, im very new to this. My grandad passed away last august and my gma was moving house and going through old things and found these in the drawer. I was fascinated by them and she asked me if i would like them. i have two of these and others of a different type i will post in separate threads.
The photos are in threes, one of the front and two of the back clasp closed and opened

Like the other examples posted, both appear to be wartime originals (S&Ls I think, although Martin or others will confirm).

Thanks for taking the time to clarify what i thought they were. I had done a little bit of research into them so its nice to finally have some others stamp their approval on them.

Does anybody have any idea how much they are worth so i know whether to put them in a safer place than where i store them currently.

hello Norm, in all honesty i wish i could tell you more about where they came from. When my grandad passed away me and my grandmother found them in a tin box in a cupboard. That was the first time i had actually seen them, and im 24 haha. All i know is my grandad was evacuated from leeds to the lincolnshire countryside. He was billeted on a farm throughout the war very close to RAF Faldingworth.

Planes were shot down in that area and any survivors were effectively prisoners of war and most of them ended up working on the farm where he was living at the time. I know that there were Polish, Italian and german prisoners of war that worked on the farm and he used to drive them up and down the fields in the trailor. Any one of those could have acquired them and possibly given them to him as he was a boy back then.

Another lead to which they could have been gather is my grandmas brother who went to war. He was station in africa i have his medals too and his british army log book and an old bit of paper army money in the back of it. In not sure if he was fighting or which way he came back to the british isle after the war but he too could have got them. Thats why i like the ides of a depot being raided, he could have raided one on the way back through europe home.

Its always going to bug me where they actually came from, and i cannot ask now , I'm just glad i found a few people who are as enthusiastic about them as i was when i first laid eyes on them. I took them to my local museum, and to the maritime museum in liverpool and they didnt know much about them, so i did a bit of research, found the fantastic website and now i know there real!

Hi Ash,

as Norm mentioned,these are two very nice period examples by S&L.

S&L continued production after the war but your badges display the reverse hardware and rivets we beleive to be of wartime production.

The Poles your Grandad referred to may have been D.P.s (Displaced Persons) it was common after the war for refugees to come to the UK and work on the farms. Italian and German P.O.W.s worked on the land (and in the Derbyshire quarries) round here, many stayed on after their 'de-nazification' and married British girls, for example there was an Italian community in Chesterfield.
