    Unknown U-Boat ?

    Hi guys,

When I saw this U-boat I was I was so intrigued by it that I decided to pick it up and after receiving it today I'm still a little puzzled by it.

First of all I can't match it to any other u-boat I know. It's close to some but not really a perfect match that could have come out of the same die.

Secondly it's an early badge but not made out of tombak but out of pure white metal (clearly visible on the reverse scan to the lower right)

And finaly it has a highly uncommon hinge, pin and catch to say the least.

Do any of you guys know this badge or maybe have one in your collection? Any thoughts on a possible maker?

    All comments welcome

    KR

catch, IMO very close to the Wernstein catch on early sportbadges

                      Hi Christian,

Thanks for posting these pics, nice to see another one.

I took the liberty of resizing your pics a bit that makes it easier to see the whole picture. Do you have an obverse pic of the badge too?

                      Thanks

                            Hi Guys,

Here is the obverse of Christian's U-boat. Christian got the badge from a DKiG winner (didn't know if I was allowed to post his name) who served on the U-870.

Christian in your e-mail you stated that the badge was made out of silver, I assume you ment that the base metal was white metal?

In fact there is only one difference between yours and mine based upon what I can see from the pics. Your pin looks more flat. Mine is slightly rounded at the edges and almost half of the tip of the pin is filled away. IMO this was done to make it easier to bend it arround the catch when opening or closing it. Also a feature I have never seen on any other badge be it KM, Luft or Heer.

There is an unknown maker of Spanish Crosses (and KVKs, EKs) who uses exactly this type pin/hinge catch:
