Odd dolphin-mouth u-boot (?) pin

I just got this sub pin and noticed it has a ... Dolphin's eye and mouth !
I think it's a u-boot. But can find nothing like it anywhere incl. Gordon's superlative 'torpedos los.' it's well-made of stamped/gilded brass with nice good detail for something 2 1/2 inches wide.

Perhaps it is something to do with HMS Dolphin which is/was a UK shore establishment.

Hi,

It's an interesting design, an the pin is no doubt old, but the sub design does not look German to me. The hardware looks more British/US. It does not look like a ship made item - it appears to have been dies stamped.

It may be worth linking this to the US subforum, possibly even the internaitonal forum as well for more comments.

You are right it's the current Submarine Badge from Chile. The Uniform Regulations from 25. August 1987 reintroduced the previous design in gilt for all ranks. At the same time a frosted silver insignia was authorized for certain non-sea-going personnel attached to the submarine service.
