    Hi skalp,

Looks like a genuine zinc Hermann Aurich, Dresden.

I'm not quite sure about the obverse finish though. These badges received a silver coloured coating and then a gilded layer which faded over time. On that one, we see a few vestiges of the gilding on the reverse below the catch, and yet the obverse has an unusually well-preserved gilding. Also there's usually a white frosting over the gun shield in well-preserved examples.

So either this is a variant finish or it has been re-finished at some point. Here are some examples with the typical obverse finish, and also the reverse of the badge second from the right showing a well-preserved and yet faded gilding.

    Best regards,
    ---Norm

        Hi Andy,

But if the gilding is well preserved on the obverse, it should also have the frosting on the gun shield, and the gilding should have been well-preserved on the reverse too, no?

        Best regards,

          Hi,
It is original zinc HA CAB but with refinished obverse as pointed out by Norm and Andy.
I enclose my badge for comparison. It has reverse finish in the same shape as skalp's CAB and I would expect obverse finish in both badges also look similiar. It looks like the obverse was polished, remnants of original wreath finish and silver frosting on the gun removed, and then the wreath was gold painted again.
          Cheers,
          Hubert

Could this one had bad storage on one side?

Here are more pics. If you look closely you see some of the gilding vanished. i am not an expert like you guys but i doubt that the widow (or the soldier himself) who gave me that piece put new gild on that piece.Ok of course we never know as we have not been there. skalp<p><img src="http://cdn01.trixum.de/upload2/c/v/cv3x5RSCDatB132266004107S.jpg"></p> <p><img src="http://cdn02.trixum.de/upload2/C/S/CSP60dJxlMLX132266004547S.jpg"></p> <p><img src="http://cdn02.trixum.de/upload2/7/0/70godxZlBp1m132266004999S.jpg"></p>

Another possibility is that someone "cleaned" the reverse and the obverse gun shield, thereby removing the reverse gilding and the obverse white frosting? And in that case, the badge must otherwise have been stored away from light and the elements to avoid the fading of the obverse gilding. Even totally mint examples look faded otherwise.

                Best regards,
                ---Norm
