Schwerin HSF - KM Veteran Acquired

Here are two Schwerin HSF Badges from my collection - one acquired directly from a KM veteran in Germany in the 1970s, along with his other awards and regalia. Both awards appear to have the proper characteristics of originals as shown on this forum and in the excellent study presented by Mike Kenny.

Both are tombak with most of the original fire-gilt finish remaining showing very little wear.

The early-type badge on the left is the vet-acquired one. It has the heavy fire-gilting that shows the typical finish, with burnished swastika and "X" wreath tie.

Both have the correct dome-headed hinge pins - the earlier vet-acquired one placed on the left side and the other later badge on the right side of the hinge.

The left badge has the hinge assembly placed lower than the one on the right and there is a slight difference of 1-2 cm. in the length of the fastening needle.

The "C" shaped retaining clasps differ with the right having a flat base and triangular-shaped profile on the open end.

Both badges have the dot lines in the usual position.

Other characteristics should be obvious or visible from the pictures below.

Comments and feedback will be appreciated.

    Thank you.

    John

              Excellent John.

Two fine looking early pieces and one from the Veteran too.

Do you know what ship/s he served on?

              Regards,Martin.

Thanks to all for the positive comments.

First of all, allow me to correct my obvious mistake above:

"...there is a slight difference of 1-2 mm. in the length of the fastening needle."

Martin, to answer your question, he initially served on the "Scharnhorst" as a "Seekadett" which is where he earned his HSF in 1941. He then moved-on to the U-Bootwaffe and served on three different submarines until the end of the war. His U-Bootskriegsabzeichen, awarded in 1942, may be seen in posting #16 of my thread here:

                  http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...=506909&page=2

He is one of those brave U-Boot Maenner who survived the heavy losses and lives in retirement in Germany to this day.

I am finally nearing completion of my website on which this grouping will be featured:

                  www.thirdreichregalia.com

                  Thanks for your interest.

                  John

HSF is my favorite KM badge. I hope I will acquire one some day, possibly in those conditions.

Here, you are showing us two outstanding Schwerin pieces. Thank you
