    Schwerin U-Boat Badge

The wealth of detailed information available on this badge here on the forum is outstanding.

Having done my homework, I now present this badge as what I believe to be an early, period original Schwerin U-Boat Badge of the classic 1st pattern type (Type 1a), for opinions and assessment.

I feel that it conforms to the pattern indicators as follows: thin neck; "svelte trimmed beak"; large maker mark; dome-head hinge pin; round "C" shaped clasp and flat, unburnished top wings.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

    John

Sorry to say, but that one is not original I´m afraid.

            agree

I would have to agree with Nordmark/Daniel on this one. Eagle's head looks funky and catch is too big!

This badge is a version of the old "cyclops" fake with the well known fake extra large maker mark.

              See attached.

Unfortunately I agree with all the comments on this reproduction of the Schwerin U-Boat Type 1a:

Eagle head wrong, catch wire too wide, maker mark too big and internal cutouts not right.

But these are excellent photos for reference in the forum so many thanks for posting!

                Best regards,
                ---Norm

Thanks to all for the responses. Another good learning experience for me...and hopefully instructional for other collectors. I have posted pictures and a link to this thread in the Fake Gallery for posterity and reference.

                  Best regards,

                  John

                      Hi John,

I know this is very frustrating. But this will pass, this happened to all of us and you just have to move on and concentrate on your sources. Comes time, comes the U-Bootkriegsabzeichen...

                      Regards,

                      Daniel

                          Michael,

Well, this is the problem these days--the fakes are pretty good for most people. I am "forced" in a way to look at these threads everyday of course so I have more exposure to the universe of fakes than most. Maybe you can take over from me at some point!!!!

Anyway, since I see the same bad marks and designs over and over, it keys my memory without having to do a lot of research. Still, I would not go to a show and just buy a badge without a side by side comparison on my computer to check it out. A quick call can cost you.

Naturally, the easiest way to attack the problem of having to carry a computer to a militaria show is to just learn the originals and not all the fakes. Easier said than done.

Therefore I think buying online is easier since you have your database here to check a badge out or post it for opinions. I think most of these fakes are designed not to fool us, but to fool those that go to a show, have the basic knowledge of what a badge should look like, but not quite enough to tell fake from period. Or to fool a dealer who cannot possibly know every single badge from the TR period. I am not sure a faker cares what we say or think on this or any other forum to be honest.

My take and opinion, other thoughts would be interesting to see.

                          John

Have to agree with the others John, not a good one.

First flag for me was the fat pin, then...the eagle's eye and maker's mark.

Not sure if it's the same as the old "Cyclops" of old, as the eye looks a bit different, but they may be trying to refine that.

Either way, hope you can return it.

                            Tim

The other advantage we have is the ability to blow these images up to the size of your computer screen. In hand, not so easy.
