U-Boat Badge with Diamonds
Over the past few days I have been exchanging emails with Dietrich and John R and we have discussed the base material at length.
I have measured the "Cremer" badge and compared it with the "Merten" badge being auctioned at Hermann Historic as well as a standard "Schwerin" badge in tombac. All three badges are almost identical in size but the weight of the "Diamonds" version is significantly greater:

It should be pointed out that the diamonds awards are slightly thicker by an average of only 0.6%. They also have a slightly larger pin and of course the diamond swaz.
Dietrich has confirmed that silver weights between 10-20% more than tombac which points to the base material being silver or a silver alloy, but of course there is no silver hallmark to prove this point.
