    SHF badge gold finish

    Hello!

I find one SHF badge on e-stand and I would like to ask some experts for some opinion about golden finish on that badge oak wreath.
Looks untuched but some parts looks worn.
    Thanks
    M

    Hi,

this is a 100% original badge, with a very nice finish on it. It is the original high quality fire gilding by Schwerin, Berlin. The badge indeed was worn, but the gilding is still intact on the wreath, no need to worry.

    Regards,

    Daniel

Both are original. The second one appears to have significantly better fire-gilt finish remaining compared to the first one.

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

          Hi Guys,

Like Mike says, the second badge looks nice but with the one caveat that flash photography of cleaned tombak can simulate the look of the fire gilding, so that from these pictures alone you can't rule out that most of the gilding may in fact be gone. I'm not saying it is -- just that you can't tell for sure. The edges on the reverse look more to me like raw tombak where the reverse finish is chipped, rather than oversplash from the obverse. Also the amount of wear, suggested by the worn highlights of the ship which reveal the raw tombak, seems more consistent with the idea of the gilding being worn off. Finally, looking at the eagle's horizontal wing feathers, it seems you can see the speckles of residual gilding just along the inner crevices.

          Best regards,
          ---Norm

            Agree with Norm.
I happen to own two Schwerin tombac HSFs. One is in mint condition, second showing good wear, with hardly no gold finish on the wreath. When taking photos using a flash - gold colour of the wreaths in both badges looks almost the same.
            Best regards,
            Hubert
