    uboat badge

    Hello,

today i got this uboat badge together with the diary and some pics from the doughter of the man. He served on U 463.
Can somebody tell me who the maker of this badge is?
Also you can t see it on the picture, but it looks like it has never been golden.
    Do they exist in silver?
    thx

Great provenance on that badge, good for you.

First, it is a Schwerin IMO, in zinc. It is not silver. It had a gold gilt on it when first made and issued. This fades off for most badges due to a chemical reaction with the zinc base metal.

Read this thread and you will find out all you need to know about the maker of this badge:

If you can get a photo from the sailor's daughter of the sailor and maybe a short note about him and the badge, that would be good to have with the badge.

The photo would be great if wartime, if not, any photo would do to keep a record of what the man looked like and what his job was on the boat.

Very nice. I agree with everything John has said. It's a Type 6 in the Schwerin U-boat Timeline thread.

Can't quite see from the photo but has the catch been broken off?

      Best regards,
      ---Norm
