    Hi Joey,

The beak on my badge is textbook for a Schwerin, if you do a search for schwerin U-boats you will only find this exact type of eagle on original buntmetall badges. No other pattern is known or accepted as far as I know.

I don't think better pics will be of any help here only handling the badge, at least for me, would give me additional info.

I think you would agree with me that the base alloy of this badge doesn't match the tombak visible on the original Schwerin HSF and S-Boat you posted in other threads. In your opinion is there a finish left on the badge or are we just seeing the base metall?

Well worn finish is good, more like non existant finish. Kind of like some peoples sense of respect

          Hi Joey,

Is it just my feeling that your not really here to learn something but only to preach your one gospel.

What are your argument to call this an original badge besides the fact that it's old? Do you realize that they started copying III reich awards 2 weeks after the war ended and that it just isn't enough to know that a badge is 50 or 55 years old since the war ended almost 59 years ago.

I can't add any more to this thread than I already did and I'm looking forward to read more opnions form the U-Boat specialist on your badge. And who knows maybe I can add a second pattern Schwerin U-Boat to my files but for now I won't

                U boat Badge

Hi Philippe This badge came from my old chargehand Steve Rudd when I worked at Vauxhall Motors Luton,He gave me a load of badges which i have included on this sight. If this badge is wrong then it was made a couple of days after wars end,so that is all I can say about it (Jurys Out).Best Joey

                  Joey,
Understand, it's not easy for a French man to appreciate all the subtilities of your langage (but as you don't speak French I will be the only one to make an effort in order to communicate with you).
I understand you are not happy with a fake badge you have probably paid a lot for.
I can paid a lot for an original schwerin but for yours I will not open my wallet.
                  Sorry for you, regards,
                  Michel

Actually, I see quite a lot of characteristics about this badge that I like. Here's a definite original, reverse view. Note how on the real thing, the levels of the upper edge of the wings are slightly out of alignment. The badge in question is the same. The lack of "cut-away" around the gun is right on some Schwerin pieces. Not also the curvature of the wreath where it narrows just before meeting the U-Boat. All correct Schwerin die characteristics which can be seen on the badge in question.

On the obverse of this good piece, note how if you follow the underside line of the top feather along, it is straight until it meets the inner, smaller "armpit" feathers, then it dips in a slight curve. Exactly the same on the badge in question.

Despite the way some people rave about them, the quality of Schwerin manufacture ISN'T always that great. They are to my mind far from being the best of the KM badge makers, you'll find others of better quality. I've had a minty Schwerin Destroyer with half the edge of the Swastika missing because it had been badly cropped, another where a chunk of the eagle's head was missing.

I think this is probably a good original badge which has been badly cropped at manufacture, and has obviously had a hard life.

This is a good thread and Gordon has provided some very valuable input.
Going forward, let's keep the discussion on the badge, Gentlemen.

                        Thank you in advance.

Like I wrote earlier the badge somehow has all the details but how do you explain the differences in the eagles head and neck. Is this just the result of handfinishing and if it is why havent we seen more of these. The typical eagles head together with the feathering untill now always was our safest bet to keep the copies apart from the originals?

Like I said, I think this is the result of it being badly cropped when the excess metal is trimmed off after the initial stamping. The eagle head/eye etc looks fine, its just the beak that is different from normal.

Hello Gordon, would those die characteristics you pointed out apply to the unmarked zinc Schwerin badges also?

                              regards,

concerning the badge, and it is just a question:

                                Everybody is happy with:
The deck (view from the back)
                                The ballast (spelling?) front
                                The propellor
The head/beak - I mean the possibility given by Gordon
                                .../...
