    Hollow back U-boat badge?

    Howdy Guys,
I was wondering if any of you had heard of a hollow back style of U-boat badge? I have one. There are no maker marks, but the detail is very good. I still am unable to post pictures. I have joined the forum (paid the $25 bucks and all), but I cannot get the pics to transfer. I have tried contacting the help line and the site directly (with no answer-kinda frustrating). Anyway, please let me know about the badge-I value all opinions and comments. I look forward to hearing from ya'll. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Andy,

Is this the badge you have. I have some other pictures of this type in my files at home.

If it is and to the best of my knowledge these are copies althoug I have to admit that they look quite convincing

Any other opinions from KM specialists on these hollow U-Boots?

I don't like this model, and I don't want it in my collection.

I agree with Michel! For my point of view this is a fake!

Thanks for the input. If someone wants to email me I can attach pics of the badge. Mine has a coke bottle style vertical pin. The eagles head is also more defined on mine (the head siluette is cut out). As always, thanks for all the help.

              Hi Guys,

A little late but here are some pics of Andy's hollow U-boat. Definitely another type than the one posted above.

              Opinions?

As a general rule I don't like hollow back KM badges. There are fake hollow back destroyer badges around as well as U-Boats. I definitely don't like the one Andy has posted, but the Hymmen type I think might be OK.
I had been thinking of buying that one denazified one from Thomas, knowing the sort of sources he gets most of his stuff from I think it is probably the first one I have seen that I would consider buying. I'll try and find out a bit more about it from him.

The feature on that first hollow U-boat that made me put it in my "doubtfull" filles is the fact that it was denazified. Doesn't make much sense to denazify a copie or does it

                          Hi,

It makes a lot of economic sense to de-nazify a repro and/or remove the hinge and/or pin and/or catch! I've seen many blatant repros passed off as either genuine or 57 versions with such "modifications".

Re hollow back KM badges - I'd avoid them unless they came directly from a German vet, and even then with a big grain of salt as in the past I've had a blatant repro in a grouping straight from a German vet's family (who fully believed it was pre-45!). Re Andy's example, it appears to have a 57-like hinge/pin/catch assembly, so personally I'd put that one in the repro/fake box.

                          Regards

                            Hi Mike

Really can't imagin you would pay top $ for such an item, probably most of us wouldn't even want it in our collection. So the poor faker would have to sell hunderds of denazified repros to make a little money.

                              Hi,

Philippe, I didn't say anything about top dollar, I didn't say they were made that way and I didn't imply anyone was making a living from it. Dodgy sellers, stuck with a blatant repro, will do whatever it takes to get a few bucks out of it. It is a fact, for whatever reason, that repros are denazified - and it's not a rare occurrence!

                              Regards
