    Minesweeper - Schwerin

    Hello all,

I was interested in picking this one up and figured it wouldn't hurt to confirm with you all. What do you think?

Also, I never seem to understand the concept of the Kriegsmarine finish or gilding. How does this gilding or gold finish rate for this badge?

    Thanks,
    Chad

    Hi Chad,

An excellent Schwerin. I'd the say the gilding is better than average on this nice example. It's missing the frosting from the water plume but most are -- hard to find a truly mint one.

    Best regards,
    ---Norm

Great, thanks for the confirmation Norm. I had a feeling it was a good one, but I hang out in the Army section too much, so I needed that second opinion

Thanks for the info the gilding. It seems like the original pins on these Schwerin Minesweepers are always fairly long like this one, correct?

        Yes, always long like that.

        Cheers,

Forgot to mention the ones with the silver reverse are the harder ones to find so that makes it even better

                    Hi Gary,

But the reverse of that badge of Chad's is not silver, just a trick of the wearing and the flash. It has the usual grey "altsilber" effect.

                    Best regards,
                    ---Norm

                            Hi Gary,

A very nice variant finish to be sure. But of course that's on a zincer, not a tombak badge like Chad's.

Martin's that was posted in the reference thread in posts 8 and 9 was the only tombak version I've seen with the silver back, which I believe represents an unfinished variant which skipped the step of chemically darkening the reverse and the waves.

                            Best regards,
                            ---Norm
