front. I have asked for better images but this seems OK to me. Like to hear what others have to say. I am in particular looking at the pin. Very typical of Schwerin and I think it fits in as #1 on the timeline. John

We just need much better images than this of this badge.

      My opinion.

Agree, some recent fakes are to good to spot from pics this size. Some measurements and weight would be useful. Also compare with the recent Staegmeir fake

That's a pain in the rear. I am out of the country and cannot take better pics at this time. I will contact the WAF member who sold this to me and see if they have better photos. If that fails, I'll try and get a family member to take some photos, though don't hold your breath. Chances are I might only be able to respond to this in a couple of months, on return home...

Sly, it is part of the problem with the hobby today. The fakes are getting so good that you need high resolution scans, like 600 dpi, front and back, pin up and pin down. It hurts the hobby to be at this point, but it would hurt the hobby more not to admit the problem.

That said, all the fakes in KM badges can be identified with proper resolution images IMO.

Again, I think your badge is fine from what I can see but the quality of your images are not good enough by today's requirements.

Here is the badge that Rob is talking about and I think you can see why we do not want to say a badge is good or bad when fakes like this are on the market without the images to back up those pronouncements.

Post your badge with resolution like this fake and you will have your answer with agreement from the collectors trying to help here.

I would have them use a scanner. If they are not familiar with how to shoot the badge with a camera, it is a waste of time for them and us.

                John, Rob and others -

Thank youfor the time and effort you have taken studying this piece. I'm grateful. Below are several images taken by my five year old son with little guidance. I think he has done a bloody great job and I can ask no more. Measurements and weight are a bridge too far, sorry. Regardless, I hope these images are enough to go on.

                With appreciation,

                S

Your son did a better job than 95% of what we see posted here, good work to him.

                    The badge looks fine IMO.

I believe it is the earliest of the Schwerin U-boat badges in the timeline.

Thanks John. He's a budding photographer so will appreciate the praise (at five I'm sure I was barely compus mentis). Anyway, I have checked the fakes gallery and see what is referred to as a 'super fake'. Is that the Staegmeir? I admit complete ignorance and despite having cross-referenced the photos fail to see any significant differences (there are plenty of minor differences i.e. the 'R' 'N' and perhaps flag & deck gun detail) between my example and the Staegmeir fake. Can you highlight the bleeding obvious to me? I believe I need a little tuition.

                      Yours lacking attention to detail,

                      S

Here are the differences, there are others. Of course, I would like others, to give their opinion. My opnion is that it is fine.

Looks like corrosion or other oxidation process going on. Not minty like the fake you are referring to.

The head on the fake is a joke.

The super fake actually is not very good. This fake is better, but not much better. In the case of the super fake in the fake badge section, just look at the pin and the pin on your badge.
