I was wondering about the man's Lanyard,maybe a whistle or one of those piping whistles? Killer Picture you hane there! Butch

AT the end of the chain here is wearing would be a Boson's Call (whistle).

To me this means the photo was taken while the ship or boat he was on was alongside and our sailor was serving as 'Quarter Master of the Watch'.

Not sure what he German term for it is.
