      Robert,

Do you know if they were an original grouping from a vet, or are they separate pieces acquired by a collector?

      Best regards,
      ---Norm

        Hello Norm,

I don't know if they belonged to the same man. They were the only German medals at the estate sale, which had the vet's personal and military items for sale as well. They were likely captured together, but I don't have any evidence they actually came from the same sailor.

            Mark,

I doubt if there is any significant difference in weight even if you had all the variants to measure.

This is why I like the Schwerin U-boat badge the best--in hand it is just a solid feeling badge and in good condition, the tombak version is beautiful on a naval uniform. The design of the eagle may or may not be pleasing to everyone's eye, however, on a uniform, this is a small badge and nobody was going around with a magnifying glass comparing eagles.

So when you get one of the Schwerin pieces, it just has a heavy and like I said, solid, dimension that makes it stand out against most of the other U-boat badges.

John, that's a well stated observation. This badge is probably twice as heavy as any other U-boat badge I've owned or seen - it is very thick. I was just not familiar with the mass associated with these badges.

I think if every crew member on the boat had one of these, the submarine would have sunk.

In Torpedo Los, Gordon Williamson states it has a weight of 26.5 gms with the Hymenn style (my second favorite due to feel and design) coming in first at 28.9

Most badges are around 18-21 gms. So big difference between those first two and the rest.

                  Hi John,
Well said. That is why I love Schwerin Berlin. BTW, the badge that started this thread is beautiful.

                  Regards,
                  Jody
