Hello Johan , I had this information from the same site ,but thank you for taking the trouble .
The album is a very good one ,but I was extremely foolish because i turned down the opportunity to buy allhis paperwork / documents and medals and badges ...at the time I could not afford the $1500 asking price .
If anyone can find more photos of Bruninghaus I would like to view them ,I have not been able to find anything on the web .

Thanks Rob...can you explain your last comment as I'm not entirely sure what you are saying.
Does anyone know if there is an official / governmental organisation /or museum that can be approached concerning U-boat crew, that is likely to be of help....I asked the chap at sharkhunters , but alas received no answer .
I also have an original WW1 U-boat photo album..excellent images of U25 attacking merchant ships on the surface , nice shots of crew ..the album contains 3 photos of its commander Otto Wunsche ,he went on to win the blue Max ..again I would really like to learn more about his life ...the only information I have is the few paragraphs on my website ...If there is anyone out there who has images of him ( I have only ever found one ) or knows of any published material ie books in German I would really be interested .
Please forgive me , but I'm a newbie to forums, ...Is there someone on this site who is deemed to have an especially in-depth knowledge on U-boats and crews ? I'm basically looking for a god like creature with encyclopedic knowledge . Does such a man exist ? ( not fussy if a knowledgable female steps forward , but how likely is that ? )

Call between 9-12 German time on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays if you wish, but a letter is the best way. They will respond if you have enclosed a donation for their work, photocopies, etc.

This is a superb archive and museum dedicated to U-boat information. It is run by a former U-boat officer. They are officially a charity and they exist on donations and membership fees so don't expect to get something for nothing. They are probably the best source for U-boat information and photos there is and they are used by most writers and historians that deal with the U-boat war. They are staffed only by unpaid volunteers and are always shorthanded. Send a donation (perhaps 20 euros) and be patient. You will get a faster response if your inquiry is in German but they are flooded with inquiries and with a limited number of staff you can expect to wait for a month or more for a reply in many cases.

If you want faster work, I would send 50 euros. That will get their attention that you are doing serious research. I have had very good luck with the staff over the past 10 years or so.

Keep the letter concise and to the point. They know you are looking for information, just be specific and they will get to it.

That is your best bet.

Keep us posted on what you find out if you would. I would also enclose some copies of photos, as many as possible, from your album so that they can put that into their archives. So you are giving something to them besides money also.

Note you will see where albums have been posted to this website. I suggest you do the same and ask if he has any information on Herbert Bruninghaus.

Once again, by giving something you will most probably get something back. You may be surprised, but if you come with information, people are far more willing to share what they might have, often not on the website, with you.

You will find whatever is out there from these two sources.

John gives the best sources the try.

The KM produced a book every which lists all officers and their ranks, I have books for 35, 42 & 44. He appears in the 42 and 44 book but not the 35. If he enlisted in class of 31 he should be in the 35 book, unless this was a mistake and he enlisted later or he transferred out of the KM to another service and transferred back again. Worth investigating.

Attached PC of Wunsche, note spelling mistake to name on card. Entered Service April 1902, Kplt 15.11.1913.
Served U25 til Sept 1915, U70 til Oct 1917, U97 til Jan 1918, U70 til Sept 1918 then Uboat testing/acceptance comission to end of war. Died 29.3.1919

Thats a great help. I will follow up your recommendations after the festive period , really pleased that I now have a way to move forward in the search for more information on these 2 albums and featured commanders . Happy to donate cds and make a financial donation.
The ww1 album is fantastic ,I have not seen anything else like it ...I suspect the archive you mention have similar quality items, but they are extremely rare on the open market .
I have well over a 100 original military photo albums and would be happy to share images on this site . Tried to find away to up load direct to threads ..other members do so , but I could not ...how is it done ? do you need to be a different grade of forum member ?
When time happy to upload my albums for view ...where and how do I achieve this ...please make any instructions idiot proof .

Hello Rob , delighted to see the photo , thanks for hunting it down . I'm pleased / relieved to see it matches the man in my album . I have a lovely photo of him and 2 fellow officers having tea and biscuits in the conning tower of U-25 ..looks to a be friendly sort of chap, at this stage of WW1 he was letting the crews of merchant ships leave before taking out the ships with subs gun . Great quality photos of this in the album .
Later in the war he presumaby followed orders and torpedoed his victims without warning .
I'm aware of 2 variant spellings of his name ..ie Wunsche & Wensche ...now you have added a third .
Again I would like to find a way to upload scans of these photos .

You need to become an Association Member, it is only $25 a year. Just go to the homepage and you will be able to find how to do it. Then you can download the images, one image per post, on this forum.

Tried to find some data for you.

I tried to look up Bruninghaus in my 01 Jan 1939 Offizier- Wohnungs- und Geburtstagsanzeiger der Kriegsmarine book and Herbert was not listed!

I wonder why he was not in there?

Hello Joe , I know that Bruninghaus was a navigator on U-38 under Heinrich Liebe prior to becoming a commander , before this he served on surface ships .
Over the coming days I will either ask rhudspith to upload images for me or become an associate member .
Some advice please ... I sell cds containing high res scans of my albums after
costs , paypal & feebay charges , tax etc , money goes to new purchases . I obviously do not want to give away high res images free of charge , I have no real desire to line the pockets of the copy and paste merchants .
What resolution should I upload to ...and is it permittable to overwrite the images with my website ...or just throughtheireyes as I usually do . I have no desire to upset any moderators by breaking rules .
