Engraved U-Boat Badge

Here is a rather interesting piece. Engraved by the family in tribute to one lost at sea.

Obverse - The badge is an unmarked Funcke & Brüninghaus

The reverse, with the Sailor's name, Alois Grasshoff, and his date of death.

The real fascinating thing for me was that the name rang some bells. It should have - several years ago I owned the award document for the U-Boat badge to this same sailor. Another piece I wish I'd kept.

Then, just a couple of days ago, I got a set of U-Boat documents, to another sailor from the same U-Boat, killed at the same time when she was sunk by allied aircraft in the Med.
What a grouping that would have made !
