The fantail mast was a focus point to me seeing several ships did not have that configuration. Really hard to find shots of the stern to show if there was the national emblem on them. The Edelweiss threw me for a loop. I chose the Blucher due to it was lost in a Norway. Reminding me of the Narvik Campaign Shield representing the Ground contingency by an edelweiss.

I enjoyed this alot. I spent about an hour looking at the heavy cruisers and learned some very interesting facts on all of them.

Look forward to some more of these.

    Hello,
I am a school teacher and I am so glad you found some educational value as a result. You did some reading and research and that is always a good thing. In addition you learned something new.

                  Stern eagle

                  Jody,
All German capitol ships had a stern eagle upon commisioning which were usually removed when they became operational after the outbreak of the war. Occasionally the gold eagle was painted over in grey until it could be removed. Stress "usually", pictures exist of Blucher headed to Norway with the eagle still on her stern. Graf Spee still had hers when sunk because she was already at sea when the war started. But photos exist of all ships of the Hipper class sporting stern eagles at least at the time of their commisioning. The best way to tell actual Hipper and Blucher apart was by differences in the bow consrtuction and minor differences in the superstructure forward of the aircraft catapult. I have always had an interest in this class as my Mother's Uncle was a chief machinist mate killed aboard the Hipper. Look forward to more puzzles.
                  Mike

I would like to see pictures of the Prinz Eugen and Blucher with these eagles on their stern.

The pictures of the stern of the Prinz Eugen during launch and commisioning are without stern eagle. There were no pictures of the Blucher showing the stern to substantiate the presence of the stern eagle.

Well I have to admit I had guessed the Blücher. Now I don't feel so bad since really they all look darn alike!
So for the benefit of those of us who even now still don't see the difference (even if it's just me!), what are the the precise features on this model that scream out "Hipper!" now that we've ruled out the stern eagle as a distinguishing feature.
