Hi Harry,
I don't recall seeing one with a reverse like that! The seam is very unusual - and imo suspicious. Pity the pics aren't decent. I have a suspicion that the basemetal is also not a typical zinc-alloy. At the moment I lean toward it being a casting. Better pics, and a decent shot of the catch crimp, may change things though.

This badge looks to be vaulted. Many Minesweeper badges seem to be found vaulted. Very few by the manufacturor but in many cases by the sailors themselves. This vaulting of Minesweeper badges seems to have been a period 'fad' among those small boat sailors to improve the look of their basic badge.
Perhaps the seam is from the tool used to vault the badge?

Has anyone noticed the waves on each side of the water plume are at different levels. To me that indicates honest hand finishing, not something that you would see faked.

Interesting badge. Keep in mind that there are two minesweeper variants out there that use the same reverse hardware (crimped-in catch and hinge), one is marked AS in a triangle and the other unmarked. The wreaths on these two are almost identical, ALMOST but not quite 100%, meaning two different dies. The eagle's head and chest are some of the differences between the two. The badge in question has the AS-in-triangle eagle detail but is unmarked. The base metal gives me a weird feeling as well as the pock marks and the line on the reverse. The hardware looks period though, and the obverse looks good as well. Hard to say at this point but we may be looking at a very good casting of an AS-in-triangle badge.
