            Hi Dave,

Both badges appear good to me. I'm not sure of the maker for the first one but the second one appears to be of the typs attributed to Juncker. I'm used to seeing the latter in tombak, but this one ovbiously appears to be a decent zincer. The excess flashing around the reverse inner profile should be examined though, to make sure it's not a good casting.

            Regards
            Mike

              Thanks Mike

if it were to be a casting, what should I be looking for on the badge?

              cheers

              Dave

Absence of shear marks (perpendicular), excess of file marks (angled) and/or casting pits on the edges.

The outer reverse edge does appear to show Juncker-like hand-finish bevelling. It may be that this one simply did not receive much hand finishing (flash removal).

                    Hello Dave,

The first badge you show is an original by Klein & Quenzer with a needle pin variation.

                    Best regards,
                    Tom

Dave, you've got the badge in hand. When you use a loop, what do you see when you look into the inner edges? Shear lines? From the edge scan, the badge appears thinner than I'd have expected and I don't see much in the way of either shear or file marks - nothing rings alarm bells for me though.

                          Regards
                          Mike

as far as the inner edges go: from what I can see there are file lines around the inside top part of the wreath, however not on the inside part of the wreath below the U boat: where the flashing is.

Im not sure what shear lines are sorry.

                            does this mean anything?

                            thanks

On your edge scan in post#9, shear marks (thin striations, perpendicular to the edge) are clearly visible on the main pin.
