Hi Ed,
Imo that one just does not look right. The obverse detail looks weak and the reverse edges look a bit soft. Unusual hardware for a KM badge. Probably a casting from a Schwerin.

Ed,
Member Kirk posted another of these first pattern unmarked badges recently. I think most of these reproductions (IMO) badges were made in the mid-70s and therefore have a lot of wear as they are 30 years old now and can cause one to think they might be period pieces.
Neither badge was made recently I believe.
Your badge and Kirk's do not match known examples in the thread pinned at the top of the page with the accepted variations posted plus the fact that they both are very soft in detail--not what you would expect to see in an original.

Hello to all,
I think this badge deserves a bit more scrutiny. It is not a casting off a Schwerin, but appears to be like the type of badge that is attributed to Steinhauer & Lück. I think this badge has that raised, circular marking on the reverse. Unfortunately, the angled shot of the reverse has blocked out that small detail.
Ed first posted this badge in another thread. It was a small picture showing five other badges, all believed to be fakes. I felt that this S-boat Badge could be real, so I suggested that he show better pictures. I had also mentioned that the pin hinge was unlike any found on this type of badge, but hardware variations do exist on original badges.
Anyway, I have posted the picture below. The black arrow points to what I believe is the raised, circular marking attributed to S&L. I do realize that this tpye of badge by S&L is usually the subject of much debate. Some people accept them as completely legitimate, while others condemn them as fakes from the 70s. Having said this, I must admit that the detail on this example does seem a little weak. But I do believe that S&L did produce wartime examples of this badge. Whether or not this is one of those, I cannot say with any kind of certainty. I still cannot dismiss it as a fake just yet.
Best regards,
Tom

Imo it is a casting from a Schwerin. It shares the same obverse details (not as well defined compared to originals though), including the distinctive off-kilter "shoulders" either side of the eagle's head. The reverse is simply flat, rather than trying to reproduce the maker marked vaulted reverse of a genuine example.

Just to clarify though, the S&L S-boat Badges are flat-backed and have the same off-kilter eagle wing design. Is it your opinion then that all S&L first-pattern S-boat Badges are postwar and castings off the Schwerin badge?

Hi Tom,
Assuming that S&L did indeed make genuine (zinc) 1st Pattern E-boat Badges, I am in no position to make a blanket statement to the effect that all of these badges are fake.
I am only commenting on the badge presented in this thread, which I have already outlined some concerns with (you can add the patchy 3 or 4 colour reverse finish to that list!).
Ed, are you able to add some accurate dimensions?
